RULES

1. Each team will play the other members of the League twice in the course of a season. ONE HOME & ONE AWAY.

2. Each team can have as many signed players as they wish but will only be able to play a maximum of 13 players in a league match. Each league match will consist of 7 singles and 3 doubles games. Cup matches may be of a different format.

3. All matches shall be played on a Thursday night, except some Cup ties (Wednesday, Thursday or Friday). Matches to start by 8.00pm and end by 11.30pm when the result will stand. (But see rule 17 for tied Cup games).

4. Players will break alternately, Home team to start. The final frame of a tied cup match will be decided by the toss of a coin.

5. A match can start when a team has two players present. A team must have 6 players present to complete a match, (seven in certain cup games, eg Whyte & Mackay). Failure to do so will result in loss of match and a £20 fine. Failure to have two players present by 8.00pm will result in loss of one frame and a further frame for each quarter of an hour thereafter until such time as two players are present.

6. Games are to be played continuously. The time limit of 1 minute 30 seconds allowed between shots is permitted only once per side in each frame. The time limit is then 1 minute for that side for the rest of that frame. A time penalty is two visits to the opposition. Referees must ensure that time limits are strictly adhered to for all games and that they are equipped with an appropriate watch.

7. A player must be registered either at a general meeting or by notification to the Secretary in writing (posted in the Pool box in Shaws by 2pm Saturday) or in accordance with Rule 4c of the Constitution before they can play in any match. Registration fee is £2. Any team playing unregistered players will lose points and be fined £10. Players must be at least 16 years old.

8. It will be possible for any player to transfer from one team to another providing both team captains agree and the transfer takes place in the first half of the season.

9. The team captains should sign team sheets and results shall be returned to the League Secretary in Shaws Bar, Ayr by 2.00pm on the Saturday following the match. Note that out of town teams have until the second Saturday following a match to return the team sheet but they must phone in the result to the Secretary by the first Saturday. The winning team or, in the event of a draw, the home team, is responsible for returning results. Failure to do so will result in a £20 fine.

10. Cup results must be phoned in to the League Secretary no later than 12.00 midnight on the night of the match. A team sheet must still be returned to the Pool box in Shaws Bar. (see Rule 9)

11. Home team to supply drinks to visitors. Seven drinks only (6 on Cup nights).

12. All outstanding fines must be settled by the end of the season or rule 6a of the constitution will be enforced.

13. UK Rules - as supplied to all teams - are to be followed.

14. a) On the break, either a ball (or balls) must be potted OR two balls must pass the middle line. Failure to do so will result in a foul break and the balls must be re-racked. The opposition then has two visits but must also comply with this rule with the first visit.

b) On the break, if no balls are potted the breaking player must nominate to the referee, a group of colours before leaving the table. If the breaking player does pot a ball (or balls) then that player is free to nominate either colour and continue the break. Failure to nominate is a foul giving two visits and a free table to the opposition. Note that the opposition should nominate a colour on the second visit as usual. If the breaking player goes in off or commits any such foul he(she) will still nominate either colour before the opposing player commences their two visits.

15. With the exception of a 14a above all other reracks regardless of by accident or design will be of a 9-ball type. For clarification, after racking the balls for a restart the referee will remove the top ball and the 5 back row balls.

16. For clarification: If a player deliberately touches or lifts a ball from the surface of the table or from a pocket the penalty is loss of game. Note that any player can lift the white ball from the chute, after it has passed through the mechanism of the table, without penalty.

17. In the event of a tied Cup game, ie. the game is drawn at 11.30pm, a penalty shoot out will be used to decide the tie. Similar to football, five players from each team will take alternate shots at a spotted black. For each player the black is spotted and he (or she) has one chance to pot it. The score after five shots apiece will determine the winner. If the match is still tied the same five players from each team will take alternate shots as before but sudden death will apply.
18. No tactical talk between doubles partners will be allowed during visits. For clarification, a visit starts when the player whose shot it is touches the table.

19. On the night, the referee has the final say on all matters relating to the game including foul shots, interpretation of the rules, time, and control of bad or unsporting behaviour. However, see protests, rule 20 below.

20. Any disputes or protests which cannot be resolved on the spot should be referred in writing, along with £5 from the protesting party, to the League Secretary via the Pool box in Shaws Bar, Ayr by 2pm on the Saturday after the match in accordance with constitution rule 7.

21. All teams will be responsible for the general upkeep of the table and equipment, (Note: a rest must be available). The size of tables must fall between 6 ft by 3 ft and 7 ft by 4 ft. The committee will monitor the standards of tables and investigate any reports of substandard playing conditions.

22. It is the purpose of the League to promote the game of pool in Ayr and District and to foster harmony among the teams concerned. All competitors are asked to enter into the spirit of the competition and display responsibility, good behaviour and sportsmanship at all times.

The best of luck to your team in the 2003-2004 season.
